• AML Compliance in Remote Customer Onboarding

Understand the risks of remote onboarding and learn effective strategies to detect fraud, strengthen customer due diligence, and meet AML obligations.

Is Remote (eKYC) Onboarding Allowed in the UAE?

Yes. Remote, non-face-to-face onboarding is allowed under the UAE's risk-based approach, provided you carry out full customer due diligence. Cabinet Resolution 134 of 2025 (Articles 6 to 9) requires you to identify the customer and verify their identity using reliable, independent sources, whether in person or online. Because non-face-to-face is a risk factor, you apply eKYC controls and measures proportionate to the risk (Article 5).

What is eKYC (electronic KYC)?

eKYC, or electronic KYC, is carrying out customer identification and verification through digital means rather than in person. It typically combines document verification (checking an identity document is genuine), a biometric or liveness check (confirming the customer is a real, present person and matches the document), and data checks against reliable, independent sources. Done well, eKYC can be as robust as a face-to-face check.

What Controls does compliant Remote Onboarding Require?

Compliant remote onboarding follows a clear, risk-based sequence:

  1. Assess the channel risk. Treat non-face-to-face onboarding as a risk factor in your risk assessment and decide what measures it calls for (Article 5).
  2. Collect identity information. Gather the identity details and documents you need from the customer through your digital channel.
  3. Verify the identity. Confirm the identity against reliable, independent sources, including authenticating the identity document (Articles 6 to 9).
  4. Confirm a real, present person. Use a biometric or liveness check, or video identification, to bind the person to the document and defeat impersonation.
  5. Screen and check ownership.Screen against sanctions, PEP and adverse-media lists, and for entities identify the beneficial owners.
  6. Apply enhanced measures and keep records. Where the risk is higher, apply enhanced due diligence, and record every step so the onboarding is defensible.

Onboarding Fraud and How to Stop It

Remote channels attract fraud: forged or altered identity documents, stolen identities, synthetic identities built from a mix of real and fake data, and impersonation using photos, video or deepfakes. The defence is layered eKYC: authenticating the document, running a liveness check so the person cannot be a static image or recording, matching the face to the document, and cross-checking the data. The course shows you how these controls work together so genuine customers pass smoothly while fraud is caught.

Why this Remote Onboarding Course is Worth your Time

Onboarding has moved online, and it is where customer experience and compliance pull hardest against each other. Make it too heavy and customers drop out; make it too light and you let in fraud and financial crime. The professionals who can design onboarding that is fast for genuine customers and tough on bad actors are exactly what fast-growing banks, fintechs and virtual-asset firms need.

In the UAE the rules still apply online. Cabinet Resolution 134 of 2025 (Articles 6 to 9) requires you to identify and verify the customer using reliable, independent sources however they onboard, and the risk-based approach in Article 5 governs how you treat the non-face-to-face channel. These duties form part of the preventive measures required by Federal Decree-Law No. 10 of 2025. Digital onboarding standards are global, so the skills travel.

Practical takeaway

You will be able to design and run remote onboarding that is smooth for genuine customers and compliant under UAE law.
